How long does a tattoo take to heal?

This is dependent on the individual, but when following our recommended aftercare a tattoo can take between 10 to 14 days to heal.

However it is important to note a tattoo can take a month or more to completely settle in. (This means no sun, surf, gym, swim, sauna for the time being.)

Do you do ‘cover up’ tattoos?

This is assessed on a case by case basis. Determining factors are based on the original design, colour, healing and other contributing factors. Your artist will discuss this with you in the consultation process and will only move forward if they are confident they can produce a great quality piece.

Charlie is particularly confident in scar ‘cover up’ pieces, whereas Josh can cover smaller scars decided upon assessment. For these pieces the private consultation will assess:

  • The age of the scar. The scar needs to be completely healed and settled before the session.
  • The scar tissue. Eg. Normal, Keloid, Hypertrophic, Pitted/Sunken, Contractured.
  • Background history. Personal, Medical etc.

We are very conscious that these are extremely personal and private matters, and we strive to be sensitive, understanding and confidential with all of our clients shared information. Our studio is a non-judgmental safe haven and we will address each and every case with empathy and compassion. We hope to be able to create new and beautiful memories that can celebrate our individual achievements and be a memento of what we have overcome.

Is there a risk of infection or reaction?

Our artists, studio and process are held to the highest sanitary standard. Performed with medical-grade equipment and a completely sterile environment, this process ensures that there is no risk of infection or cross-contamination whilst you are getting tattooed.

After your initial session, it is up to the client to tend to and properly ensure the hygiene and healing of their piece. It is the responsibility of the client to follow the provided aftercare instructions. However, if you have any further questions not covered in our guide, feel free to contact us directly and we will be in touch as soon as possible. If you are experiencing an unusual reaction, please seek out further medical advice or contact your GP.

Are ‘touch up’ appointments free?

Necessary touch-up appointments are covered for free within the first month of your tattoo, with some exemptions:

  • Below the ankle / feet / toes
  • Wrists
  • Hands / fingers / palms / knuckles

These areas will require a fee, which will always be advised within your initial consultation along with potential risks. Skin in these areas heals and retains ink differently depending on the individual’s skin texture, lifestyle, sun exposure etc., making the design more susceptible to fading, warping, blurriness and bleeding.

Will my quoted price change?

Initially, to ensure that there is enough allocated time in appointments, we will overestimate the quoted price to allow flexibility depending on the individual tattoo. In some cases this can mean that if the piece has been completed earlier than scheduled the price will be amended, and vice versa.

This will only apply to smaller tattoos.

When scheduled in for larger or full-day pieces, the quote provided is non-negotiable. Remember, your tattoo also reflects the hours of work put into the design and labour, whereas your deposit secures the time and ongoing correspondence.

How much does a tattoo at Prana cost?

Pricing depends on size, complexity, body placement, and the artist. For all pricing enquiries, each artist will provide a custom quote during consultation based on your design. Feel free to reach out to the artists directly to discuss pricing.

How far in advance do I need to book?

This depends on each individual artist’s availability. Please enquire directly with your artist about availability and scheduling.

Do you take walk-ins?

Most artists at Prana typically do pre-booked, custom pieces. That said, feel free to pop by the studio at any time to have a chat to the artists. Keep an eye on our instagram page for flash days!

How old do I need to be to get a tattoo?

18 and over. Under NSW law we can't tattoo minors under any circumstances, including with parental consent. Please bring photo ID to your first session.

Where is Prana Tattoo located?

Prana Tattoo is at 101 O’Brien Street, Bondi Beach NSW 2026. We’re a five-minute walk from Bondi Beach and ten minutes from Bondi Junction station. The studio is open by appointment, 10am – 6pm every day.

Aftercare

After your tattoo, your artist will cover it with either cling film or a second-skin adhesive bandage. The two are cared for differently in the first few days. Follow the guidance for the wrap you were given. Once that’s done, the cream and healing routine is the same for both.

Cling film

Your artist applies the cling film immediately after your tattoo. Leave it on for 1.5 to 2 hours at most, then remove it. Never re-wrap the tattoo yourself at any stage.

Once you’re home or somewhere clean (not a public restroom), remove the wrap with thoroughly clean hands. Shower, or clean the area directly with cool to lukewarm water, gently rinsing away the excess plasma and ink. Do not use soap or exfoliants.

Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel and let it air-dry uncovered, without any intervention. From here, follow the cream and healing routine below.

Second skin

Your artist applies the second-skin adhesive bandage immediately after your tattoo. Leave it on for 3 to 5 days without removing it. Don’t pick or peel it early, and don’t wrap or bandage over it.

If the seal breaks early, where blood, ink or plasma leaks out or the edges loosen, remove it straight away to stop bacteria forming underneath. This sometimes happens after the first day and is nothing to worry about; it just means your healing routine starts a little sooner.

To remove it, get in the shower with clean hands and peel it slowly downward, top to bottom (for example, knee to ankle on a leg). Clean the area with cool to lukewarm water, gently rinsing away the excess plasma and ink, no soap or exfoliants, then pat dry and let it air-dry uncovered. From here, follow the cream and healing routine below.

Cream & healing for both wraps

Once the wrap is off and the tattoo has been cleaned and dried, the routine is the same whether you had cling film or second skin:

  • No cream on the first night, or the day after. Start on the second or third evening.
  • Use a pea-size amount, just enough for a thin, transparent layer. If it looks cloudy or foggy, it’s too much.
  • Apply once a day; twice only if essential, and at least 6 hours apart (for example, morning and evening after cleansing and airing the tattoo). Don’t over-apply. Too much cream keeps the tattoo wet and stops the skin breathing.
  • Shower as normal, but don’t soak or submerge the tattoo. Let warm water run over it briefly, never too hot.
  • No swimming in the ocean, pool or spa, and no saunas or steam rooms while it heals.
  • Around day 4 to 6 the tattoo will begin to flake and may form light scabs. Don’t pick, scratch or peel. It will be itchy as it heals, and that’s normal.
  • Continue the routine for 10 to 12 days. The tattoo settles around day 12, and is fully settled in tone and detail after about a month.
  • Keep it out of the sun for the full 12-day healing period, and don’t cover it up to head outside.
  • Always apply sunscreen once it’s 100% healed, roughly 2 to 3 weeks after your appointment, no sooner, or you risk damaging it.
